The Middle Adventure [MAFADI]

The Middle Adventure [MAFADI] is an opportunity to summit the highest point in South Africa!

The Middle joins forces with Umphafa Berg Tours to bring you this journey of a lifetime. The journey to the Mafadi summit is guaranteed to test your limits and leave you incredible memories!

The Middle Adventure [MAFADI] is a tough 50km hike through some of the most breathtaking terrain the berg has to offer. Over a period of four days you will bag the highest peak in South Africa and tackle two passes; Judges (ascent) and Leslies (descent). You will also tackle heartbreak hill and enjoy some down time at the iconic Marble Baths.

Along the way, immerse yourself in the stunning natural surroundings, from the sweeping valleys, fresh swimming pools and towering peaks.  As you trek higher, the air is thinner, the terrain rougher, and the sense of accomplishment greater.

Duration: 3 Nights / 4 Days

Date: 30 April – 3rd May

Day 1: 13km
We meet at Injisuthi at 9am before heading off into the hills. Our hike takes us along the river past some caves with rock paintings before we climb ‘heartbreak hill’ through to centenary hut, our camp for night 1. We sleep in tents outside the hut and there is a water source nearby.

Day 2: 10.5km
We climb further up onto the contour path before tackling the epic Judges pass which takes us up onto the escapement. Once at the top its a short walk down to the campsite which is situated along a beautiful river.

Day 3: 16.5km
After breakfast we push for the Mafadi summit! After some celebrations we get to walk along the ridge, standing on top of mountain peaks with views for days. We then get to the top of Leslie’s pass which takes us down to marble baths where we will camp for the last night.

Day 4: 8km
A short push through the lush terrain brings us back to the cars before heading home.

Fitness Levels Required:
Day 1 and 2 include some proper uphill slogs, including a pass. Day 3 is on the escarpment so altitude is a factor. The pass down is a little slippery at times due to loose soil, but is not technical and the guides will assist at the tricky sections. This is a relatively non technical route (requiring no ropes or advanced climbing)

Guides:
We will be guided by Umphafa Tours. Their team consists of certified guides and all safety measures are in place. Together, their team have over 24 years of experience and have guided over 3000 people through the mountains.

Food & Accommodation:
The Umphafa team will provide and carry all our tents, sleeping stretches and food (breakfast / lunch and dinner). Their team of porters will set up tents each night, along with a central tent to be used for communal meals and chilling. Their food is good quality.

What you need to bring:
Whilst a full gear list will be provided, you will need to carry your own hiking pack with recommended gear. Proper kit is required for a hike of this nature. Aside from gear, you would need to bring any preferred snacks, coffee solutions etc.

Cost:
R4900 per person which includes park fees, porters, guiding, tents, stretchers, all food (other than specific snacks). Additional expenses for your account would include fuel, breakfast on Day 1, lunch on the way home on Day 4 and your additional snacks.
